How wide is a race track? F1, karting and oval widths, with the actual numbers
Here is the short answer, because you may have arrived here needing exactly one number. A circuit licensed for Formula 1 must be at least 12 metres wide at every point on the lap. The FIA's design standards for any new race track set a floor of 10 metres, with 12 preferred. An international-grade kart circuit runs between 6 and 8 metres depending on its licence grade. And the straight that holds a Formula 1 starting grid must be wider still — at least 15 metres — for reasons that become obvious the moment twenty cars launch off the line together.
The long answer is more interesting, because width is one of the most consequential decisions in circuit design and one of the least discussed. It determines where overtaking is physically possible, how many racing lines a corner can hold, how much a track costs to pave, and how forgiving a circuit is of the mistakes that make racing dramatic. This article walks through the actual regulations, the outliers that break them, and — because reading about widths is no substitute for checking them — how to measure any track on Earth yourself, to a tenth of a metre, using the new measurement tool in the designer.
What the FIA actually requires
The width rules live in the FIA's circuit design standards and homologation criteria, and they are more layered than a single number suggests. The track surface itself must never drop below 12 metres on a Grade 1 circuit — the licence tier required for Formula 1, which we cover in full in our companion piece on FIA circuit grades. For new circuits at lower grades, the design minimum is 10 metres, with 12 recommended. Wherever the track widens or narrows, the transition must be gradual: no sharper than a 1-in-20 taper, so that the racing surface never presents a sudden pinch to a car arriving at speed.
The start is treated as a special case. The grid straight must be at least 15 metres wide, and that width must be carried all the way through the first corner — a rule written in the language of engineering but motivated by the memory of first-lap pile-ups. The field is never more tightly packed than in the run to Turn 1, and the regulations respond by giving it the widest asphalt on the circuit. The start line should also sit, ideally, at least 250 metres before the first corner, so the pack has begun to string out before it arrives at the first braking zone.
Width rules extend beyond the racing surface. The pit lane must be at least 12 metres wide — as wide as the track itself — and positioned alongside the start-finish straight, with its entry and exit arranged so that cars rejoining never cut across the racing line. And the track must be bordered along its full length by compacted verges, typically 3 to 5 metres wide on each side: flat, debris-free shoulders that are continuous with the track's cross-section, giving a car with two wheels off the asphalt somewhere survivable to be.
Why 12 metres? The geometry of two cars
Twelve metres is not an arbitrary figure. A modern Formula 1 car is roughly two metres wide, so 12 metres of asphalt is space for two cars side by side with more than a car's width of air between them and margin to the edges — the minimum geometry in which a genuine overtaking attempt can begin, develop, and be defended without contact being inevitable. For comparison, a standard motorway lane is about 3.5 metres: a regulation race track is nearly four highway lanes of continuous asphalt, swept through corners.
Width is also what turns a braking zone into an overtaking zone. A long straight into a hard stop creates the speed differential; the width of the corner determines whether that differential can be spent on a pass. A 12-metre corner offers an inside line and an outside line that both function — which is why the geometry of passing, a subject we examined in detail in what makes a good overtaking zone, is inseparable from the width question. Narrow the same corner to nine metres and the second line disappears; the corner becomes a queue.
The narrow outliers
Every rule above has famous exceptions, because circuits that predate the modern standards hold grandfathered licences. Monaco is the canonical case: a circuit threaded through a real principality, with widths dictated by streets laid out long before anyone imagined racing on them, and a lap so tight that overtaking is a news event. Baku's old-town section squeezes between castle walls in a gap of well under eight metres — two-thirds of the modern minimum — and produces some of the most tension-loaded television of the season precisely because the margin is absurd. These circuits survive on the calendar because history, spectacle, and setting are worth something the rulebook cannot measure. But nobody would be permitted to build them today, and no new circuit gets to imitate them.
The lesson for a designer is that narrowness is a spice, not a diet. Used at one signature point — a wall-lined kink, a bridge, a gate between buildings — it creates commitment and consequence. Applied everywhere, it kills the racing. This is one of the classic errors we catalogued in race track design mistakes that ruin a circuit.
Wider is not automatically better
If 12 metres is good, is 18 better? Sometimes. Extra width multiplies the viable lines through a corner, which is why the Madring's banked La Monumental was built 12 metres wide across its full 550-metre arc — the organisers wanted cars running high and low simultaneously, as we described in our corner-by-corner walk of Madrid's new circuit. But width dilutes as well as enables. A very wide corner tolerates sloppy lines, flattens the penalty for error, and can make a lap feel like open car park rather than a test. It also costs real money: paving is priced by area, so every extra metre of width runs the entire length of the lap — a budget line we quantify in how much it costs to build a race track. The best circuits vary their width deliberately: generous where a passing zone needs two lines, tighter where the track should demand precision.
Karting, ovals, and everything smaller
Karting has its own licensing body and its own numbers. Under CIK-FIA criteria, an international Grade 1 kart circuit must be at least 8 metres wide with a starting straight at least 8 metres wide; Grade 2 drops to 7 metres, Grade 3 to 6. The proportions are the point: a racing kart is well under 1.5 metres wide, so an 8-metre kart track is proportionally wider than a 12-metre F1 circuit — karting expects wheel-to-wheel traffic as the default state. Ovals answer the width question differently again. Because an oval concentrates its entire challenge into four (or two) corners taken near flat-out in packs, superspeedways carry enormous width through the turns and pair it with banking — and the interaction between the two is far subtler than it looks, which is why we gave ovals an article of their own. The general principle holds everywhere, though: width is set by the vehicle, the speed, and the kind of racing the designer wants, not by a universal constant.
Measure any track yourself — the new measure tool
Everything above is checkable, and checking it is the fastest way to develop a designer's eye for width. The designer now includes a dedicated measurement tool built for exactly this. Drag either endpoint to fine-tune its position against the imagery; double-click an endpoint to remove it; a third click anywhere starts a fresh measurement.
Try it on the real thing. Span the main straight at Silverstone kerb to kerb and watch the readout land in the teens of metres; span Monaco at the Fairmont hairpin and see how little asphalt a Formula 1 field is actually given. Measure the road outside your house and discover it is probably narrower than a Grade 3 kart track. Then apply what you find to your own design: track width in the designer is set per segment, with independent left and right widths you can drag directly on the map or type precisely in the segment widths panel — so you can hold a regulation 12 metres down a straight, open a braking zone wider, and pinch a signature corner, exactly as the professionals do.
Width is the least glamorous number in circuit design and one of the most decisive. Twelve metres is where the rulebook starts. Where you go from there — and where you dare to go narrower — is where design begins.
